Fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) are a type of fructo-polysaccharides that consist of subunits made up of glucose and fructose. These FOS cannot be digested by our bodies and instead are transported to the large intestine, where they serve as food for microbes and promote fermentation. FOS is commonly referred to as a "prebiotic" because it acts as a fertilizer for the bacteria in our colon. Certain lactobacillus bacteria have been found to preferentially ferment FOS, which is why it is often recommended as a supplement to nourish the beneficial bacteria in our gut.
